Abstract:

Educational videos have become a popular pedagogic method used by educators to stimulate active, independent learning in and outside the classroom. The rise of online learning platforms that provide video lectures in multiple fields, such as Coursera and Khan Academy, have also boosted the production of educational videos by non-expert video creators around the world. In this talk I will present findings from several research studies I am currently working on, concerning online educational videos. First, I will present preliminary results from an online experiment that tests the effects of different levels of guidance available when creating a video, on video producers' and video viewers' learning. The tradeoff found between these two target audiences of video creation may extend beyond the field of education, and may be applicable to other user generated content (UGC) settings. I will also present another complementary study, in which I analyze a large-scale set of educational videos from YouTube using visual analysis, speech-to-text methods, text analysis, and sentiment analysis. This study seeks to identify a features genome for this type of videos. I will conclude with an ongoing field experiment conducted in a large school. This study explores and estimates the effect of video creation and video viewing on the students' performance. I will discuss the managerial implications of these studies in the IS field.
