One of the most dramatic changes in the use of technology in the past decade has been the shift from PCs to mobile devices as the computerized platform of choice. Although the literature about the effects of this shift on various aspects of human behavior is rapidly accumulating, there is scant evidence about its effects on information processing and decision making in computer-mediated tasks. We examine how the accuracy of decisions in a preference task is affected by mobile use. We hypothesize that use of a mobile platform (vs. a PC platform) and a mobile display (vs. a web display) results in less accurate decisions, directly and indirectly, through their effects on information search and information load. These hypotheses were tested in a lab experiment in which participants were asked to book a hotel room online. The results suggest that poorer decisions with mobiles than with PCs are the consequence of the display rather than the platform being used.
