The human tendency to cooperate, even in large, non kin-related, groups, is often considered an evolutionary puzzle, and has been the focus of a large body of multi-disciplinary research. A common theme in this literature is that cooperation is essentially good, and should be encouraged. However, while cooperation indeed has many obvious advantages, it also has negative aspects, which are often overlooked in the literature. Awareness of these negative aspects, and of the settings in which cooperation, or a cooperative corporate culture, can backfire, is important for managers and policy makers who often seek to encourage cooperation within and between groups. I will present experimental work that highlights negative aspects of cooperation, such as people’s willingness to forfeit moral standards in order to establish cooperative relations with each other; the negative externalities of within-group cooperation on out-groups when cooperation takes place in inter-group settings; and (time permitting) the willingness to engage in second order cooperation by punishing alleged non-cooperators, even in uncertain environments where the detection of non-cooperators is error-prone.
