Immersive virtual reality (IVR) holds the promise of being a unique tool in studying human mind, brain, and behavior: it can extend ecologic validity well beyond typical laboratory settings, by studying subjects in complex scenarios, while retaining much of the control required for internal validity in experiments.

The talk will include two parts. First, I will provide an overview of the scientific research that addresses the main illusion of virtual reality, which has been termed 'presence' or 'place illusion'. I will present the approach developed by Slater et al. that emphasizes behavioral realism, and I will suggest that behavioral realism is crucial in using IVR as a research tool. Next, I will claim that one of the most promising features of IVR is that it allows studying how humans respond to improbable or even impossible conditions, while retaining behavioral realism. This will be illustrated by several examples from our research in the last few years.
