The human ability to volitionally conjure picture-like images in the mind’s-eye presumably plays an important role when considering psychologically distant events (e.g., planning or choosing). After a period of neglect by ‘basic’ researchers (and much work in more applied areas of psychology), there is renewed interest in studying the nature and mechanisms of mental imagery.

In this talk I will present our efforts to validly measure and manipulate visual mental imagery, in real time as well as our (rather surprising) first conclusions from this endeavour. I will focus on what seems to be crucial from the phenomenology of the picture in the mind (and what isn’t) and how the quality of this mental-picture relates to imagery-based performance such as mental rotation.
